Wednesday 11 May 2016

Gervanne Leridon, African Artists for Development’s president, attended Township Orchestra’s repetitions on May the 3rd at Steenberg High School, Cape Town (South Africa) with students from both promotions: Swing and Jive.

The Jive  promotion is increasingly recognized and invited to participate in many official events. On May 14 they will play in the honor of the Director of Education of the Western Cape.

The Township Orchestra program uses music as a vehicle for reintegration and academic success among South African disadvantaged students. The young musicians were given an instrument, funded by ADA, that they learn to master. Township Orchestra allows young disadvantaged South Africans from the Cape Flats neighborhoods on the outskirts of Cape Town, to appropriate jazz and traditional South African music within the school.

AAD, in partnership with the Musiquelaine association, supportssince 2014 Steenberg High School Orchestra, led by trumpeter and composer Ian Smith.
