Dancer and choreographer, Aloyce Makonde was born in Tanzania where he began his dance training in the 1990s. He graduated from Bagamoyo College of Arts (TASUBA) in 1997, then left his homeland to join the Skanes Dance Theatre – the largest independent dance company in Sweden – where he worked with choreographer Lena Josefsson on the “Siluette” program for two years.

Back in Tanzania in 2000, he participated in the creation of the first contemporary dance group in the country, Mionzi Dance Theatre. It was a short return home as less than a year later he joined the Guildhall School of Music in London where he completed his training in the performing arts.

The next three years the Tanzanian choreographer spent in Scandinavia: Denmark, first, where he officiatd as a dancer in the Yggdrasil Dance Company for two years, then in Finland, with Mestola Theatre Company.

2005 marked his return to Africa and was a turning point in his career: he participated in the project “TRAFFIC dance” as a dancer and coordinator and directed his second choreography, “Triangle” and afterwards” Mtungini.” Then in 2007 and 2009 he directed the creations “The Egg Solo ” and ” My White Painting,” respectively. Between these two productions, he participated in the constructing the dance competition Cheza Tanzania and the following year he joined the competition jury for the dance Malta Guinness Street Dance Africa in Tanzania.

He was invited as a choreographer who was associated with the Dance Forum Nairobi, Kenya in 2010 and the Regionteatre Vast Sweden in 2011 where he worked with the Swedish choreographer Camilla Ekelof for the creation of “Move 3.”

In June 2012, he worked with the UNHCR-Tanzania on a contemporary dance project in the refugee camp Nyarugusu, in Kigoma region (Tanzania).

Aloyce Makonde’s work focuses on multidisciplinary research on contemporary dance, most often in connection with the concept of community. He is now professor of dance and coordinator of several projects, both in Tanzania and worldwide. He is the founder and artistic director of the contemporary dance festival VISA 2 DANCE, held annually in Dar-es-Salaam (Tanzania).
